How To Convert A Parrot to Pellets

Published on Wednesday, 21st June 2017

Some customers may struggle with converting their birds from seed to a more pelleted diet. So we’ve wrote this handy step by step guide you can print off to give to your customers on converting their bird from a seed based diet to a complete one.

To do this they’ll need.

Scales, customer’s choice of complete food, blender or food processor, notebook and pen and the favourite food of the bird.

1.       Weigh the bird on digital scales at the same time each day.
2.       Record the weight of the bird.
3.       Choose the diet the bird wants to be converted onto and find a food that the bird really loves.
4.       Mix up the pelleted food in whichever way they find easiest, link with a blender or with a rolling pin.
5.       Mix the complete food and favourite food together in a 50:50 ratio, so both foods stick together.
6.       Feed the Parrot a small amount of the new mixture. Give the bird small tablespoons at first, then slowly increase the volume.
7.       Continue to weigh the Parrot and record the findings. Once their weight stabilises, decrease the amount of favourite foods and increase the amount of seed.
8.       Repeat step 7 until the amount of favourite food is decreased and start adding solid pieces of complete foods, so Parrots eat that instead.

It may take a while for Parrots to get used to new foods but it’s far better for their health in the long run.
